Vakka box, S

The Vakka box is handmade in Finland using traditional handicraft methods: the edges of the box are bent from alder, and the ends are tied together with spruce roots. This modern Vakka wooden box can be used, for example, as a jewellery box or for storing other small items. In Finland, Vakka boxes were, in the olden days, made for a variety of purposes: for storing and transporting food, clothing or goods, and for agricultural work like sowing seeds.

Vakka is part of the LOKAL x FDS collection, a collaboration created to spotlight local artisans and designers who perhaps are a little more unknown to the general public. Curated by Lokal Helsinki and Finnish Design Shop, the collection consists of unique, locally-manufactured products made in small-scale production, many even by hand in the designers' own workshops.

Bo-Åke Ljungars

Lokal Helsinki, founded by photographer Katja Hagelstam in 2012, is a Helsinki-based concept store and gallery specialized in Finnish design. Its own Lokal Kollection range features locally crafted pieces by both well-known and emerging Finnish designers and artisans. Lokal Helsinki has won the Finnish State Design Award in 2017 and the Finnish Design Deed Award in 2015.
